Louie's News

December 27, 2005:

Seattle restaurant icon Art Louie was working the floor in his usual style on the evening of December 23, ordering dinners for parties, telling jokes, patting customers on the back and calling the elderly women "girls." Shortly after 9:00 PM, he ordered his customary root beer, then came into the office and slumped heavily into a chair, complaining that his legs wouldn't work. As his sister-in-law Rose Louie rallied friends to lift him and called 911, a clot in Art's brain was shutting down his conscious being, leaving him in a state from which he wouldn't recover.

The mood at the Louie family Christmas dinner was subdued with Art in the hospital in a steadily declining state. When he passed to the other side on the morning of December 27th, he closed the door on a chapter in Seattle restaurant history. Art was a host who knew almost everyone in town, made everyone else feel immediately at ease, and specialized in ordering his own favorite dishes for acquaintances new and old, oftentimes making lifelong friends in the process.
